What:
Patrol deputies are investigating a single vehicle crash into the gulf in Madeira Beach. The driver was subsequently assisted out of the water by two good Samaritans.

When:
Deputies responded to the call at about 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

Where:
The incident occurred at 14230 Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach.

Why/How:
According to deputies, 51-year-old Lawrence White, an employee of the City of Madeira Beach was collecting garbage on the beach in a city pick-up truck. Deputies say White appears to have lost control of the vehicle and struck a parked USF vehicle, driven there by 29-year-old Zachary Tyler who was surveying beach  erosion for USF. Deputies say the vehicle continued on striking a beach cabana, three beach chairs, and narrowly missing other beachgoers to include 60-year-old David Carefoote, who is visiting from Canada and was fishing on the beach.

Deputies say the vehicle then entered the water at about a 45 degree angle and drove the length from one concrete barrier to another.

The vehicle then began to sink. Deputies say both Tyler and Carefoote entered the water, assisted White out of the vehicle and brought him to shore.

White was transported to St. Pete General for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies say White appears to have suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The investigation continues.
