What:
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has received a $47,155 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project.

The purpose of the project is to educate and enforce safe pedestrian, bicyclist and driver behavior in designated hot spot areas in an effort to reduce traffic crashes and fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

When:
The details will begin on Friday, December 19, 2014 and run through May 31, 2015.

Where:
The first detail will be held on Tampa Road from Lake St. George to East Lake Woodlands Parkway.

Subsequent details will be conducted at various north and south Pinellas County locations. (See list below.)

Why/How:
Beginning on December 19th, 2014 and through May 31st, 2015, Pinellas County deputies will be conducting on-the-street high visibility education and enforcement operations regarding pedestrian and bicycle safety. The monies for the project were received from the Florida Department of Transportation.

The operations will include the distribution of educational materials, as well as the issuance of warnings and/or citations to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists in accordance with Florida Statutes. The operations will follow an education, warning citation progression. Deputies say the operation will begin with the education and warnings discretion and on March 15, 2015 will transition to a citations discretion.

The details will be assigned two deputies, will be conducted three times per week in four hour segments; and will frequent each of the 15 designated “hot spot” locations on multiple occasions.
