When:
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is hiring now for the 2015-2016 school year.

Where:
The Sheriff’s Office is hiring for various school posts across Pinellas County.

Why/How:
The Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified applicants for several School Crossing Guard positions. Crossing Guards assist school children across streets at designated intersections and help keep them safe as they travel to and from school.

The Crossing Guards are expected to remain alert at all times in order to prevent hazardous traffic situations. They must have basic knowledge of traffic laws. They must have the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and the ability to develop a positive relationship with the children School Crossing Guards must be reliable and dependable. Good eyesight and hearing are mandatory.

As with all Sheriff’s Office positions, applicants must submit to a background check and a polygraph test.

The Pinellas County School Crossing Guard program presently has 128 crossing guards covering 191 posts for elementary, middle and one high school in the unincorporated area as well as in the contract cities of Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Madeira Beach and Seminole.

The program began in 1972 as a volunteer program. Through the years the program has grown to meet and adhere to F.D.O.T. standards. Each school crossing guard attends a mandatory six-hour classroom training session and two hours of field training. This is followed up with three days of field training at the guard’s assigned post.
