Where:
The operation was conducted county-wide in Pinellas.

Why/How:
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has released the results of “Operation Pill Drop”, a program that started in Pinellas County on October 17, 2016 and continued through November 12, 2106. The operation was spearheaded by the Florida Sheriffs Association Task Force.

During that time span the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office was successful in taking more than 535 pounds of prescription drugs.

25 sheriffs’ offices across the state participated in the operation taking in a total of 6,667 pounds of prescription drugs.

"Operation Pill Drop" encourages citizens to properly and safely dispose of unwanted medications from their households that could otherwise be potentially dangerous if acquired by children or adults, while also providing an environmentally safe alternative to medication disposal. Other goals of the program are to provide awareness about prescription drug abuse, protect children from accidentally ingesting medications, educate the public on how to safely store medications, and take preventive measures in avoiding the theft of medication.

Pinellas residents can still drop off expired or unused medications during business hours at drop boxes located at two Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office locations. For more information please visit http://www.pcsoweb.com/operation-medicine-cabinet
