The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office announces the graduation of Major Larry Nalven from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

On Friday, December 14, 2018, Major Nalven completed one of the toughest challenges available to local law enforcement officers- the FBI National Academy.

As a graduate of the 274th Session FBI National Academy, Major Nalven enters into a select group made up of less than one percent of the country’s law enforcement officers. Major Nalven was hand-picked by his agency to attend the academy along with about 249 other local law enforcement officers from around the United States and around the world.

The 11-week academy began on October 1, 2018, in Quantico, Virginia. Local executive-level law enforcement officers attending the academy lived in a dorm-like setting and spent most of their time in the classroom.

Major Nalven’s National Academy classes included Contemporary Issues in Law Enforcement, Fitness in Law Enforcement, Behavioral Science for Law Enforcement Leadership, Essentials for Law Enforcement Leaders, Law Enforcement Approaches to Counterterrorism, and Leadership in Investigative Strategies for Violent Crime.

The FBI National Academy is dedicated to the improvement of law enforcement standards and has long been a benchmark for professional continuing education. Participants are drawn from every state in the union, from U.S. territories, and from over 150 partner nations. Law enforcement officers who attend the academy return to their communities better prepared to meet challenges in their communities.

The overall goal of the academy is to support, promote, and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic, and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research and forging partnerships throughout the world.

The academy was created in 1935 with 23 students in the first class. It has grown over the years to the current enrollment of over 1,000 students a year. The FBI National Academy is one of the premier law enforcement academies in the world.
