Captain James Kenney joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2015 with more than 27 years of law enforcement experience.  Captain Kenney began his career in 1988 as a deputy sheriff with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), where for eight years, he served in numerous areas including the Patrol Division, Street Crimes/Drug Unit, and the Marine Patrol Division.  Captain Kenney joined the Drug Enforcement Administration in September 1995, finishing No. 1 in Basic Agent Class 99. While with the DEA, he was assigned to several Duty Stations including Tampa, Florida; Santa Cruz, Bolivia; Bogota, Colombia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and San José, Costa Rica. Captain Kenney was promoted to group supervisor in December 2004 while in Charlotte, and he was the country attaché in Tegucigalpa and San José in 2009 and 2012, respectively. 

Captain Kenney is responsible for all narcotics investigations, supervises the Intelligence Unit, and oversees the Technical Operations Unit, which includes audio and video forensics.
