Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a vehicle vs. bicycle crash involving serious bodily injury to the bicyclist

According to investigators, 60-year-old Robert Peel was riding his bicycle near the outside edge of the pavement southbound on Park Street just north of 62nd Avenue.

Deputies say 59-year-old John Ludwig was also traveling southbound in his 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser when Ludwig’s vehicle struck Peel’s bicycle from behind.

Investigators say according to witnesses Ludwig’s PT Cruiser had drifted off the road prior to impact with Peel.

The accident caused serious bodily injuries to Peel. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center.

Ludwig was not injured as a result of the crash. Although deputies say he appeared to be having complications due to a medical condition, he was transported to St Petersburg General Hospital.

Neither alcohol nor speed appears to be factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
