Major Greg Handsel grew up in Pinellas County. After high school, he attended Florida State University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology. In 1985, he joined the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff. While in Patrol Operations, he served in Field Training, with the DUI Unit, was a member of SWAT, and the Environmental Lands Unit before transferring to Investigative Operations.

As a detective he was assigned to Narcotics before being promoted to Sergeant and returning to Patrol, and later to Administrative Investigations. After his promotion to Lieutenant, Handsel was assigned to the Criminal Enterprise Division, and later to the Child Protection Investigation Division. He was promoted to Captain while supervising Child Protection, then reassigned to Judicial Operations when he was promoted to Major in 2013.

Major Handsel is also a graduate of Southern Police Institute’s Executive Leadership Course.
