Major Lora Smith joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1989 and is the Bureau Commander for the Support & Health Services Bureau within the Department of Detention and Corrections. Major Smith began her career as a civilian employee working in Inmate Records. In 1991, she became certified as a Deputy and worked in various assignments within the department. She was appointed to Corporal in 1995 and promoted to Sergeant in 1998. As a Sergeant, she established and supervised the Field Training Program at the jail until she was promoted to Lieutenant in 2002. During that time, she was also a member of the Negotiator Response Team. As a Lieutenant, she worked in various divisions at the jail and was the Transition Coordinator for the construction of the Healthcare Facility as well as several other construction projects. Major Smith has a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the Stony Brook University, is a graduate of the Senior Leadership Program sponsored by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and attended the International Association of Chief of Police Women’s Leadership Institute.
