PINELLAS COUNTY – On July 22, 2024, at approximately 6:12 p.m., deputies responded to the area of 12960 Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach for a swimmer in distress.
According to deputies, 31-year-old Hector Colon was in the water with his roommate, 34-year-old Angel Nunez, when they began to feel the current getting stronger. Nunez was able to swim backward to stay afloat, but Colon began yelling for help before disappearing under the water. Nunez went to shore to seek help and a beachgoer called 911.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Flight Unit, and Dive Team responded to begin searching for Colon. The United States Coast Guard, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, and Seminole Fire Departments assisted with search efforts late into the night.
At approximately 6:20 a.m. on July 23, 2024, a subject matching the description of Colon washed ashore on the shoreline near 14900 Gulf Boulevard. Deputies responded and obtained positive identification. Colon was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin was notified.
The incident does not appear to be suspicious.
The investigation continues.
