Why/How:
Detectives assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit have arrested a suspect for grand theft from persons 65 years of age or older.

Detectives began their investigation in August of 2015 after it was reported that the female victim had unauthorized amounts of money taken from her bank account.

According to detectives, the suspect was a caregiver to the 96-year-old victim and used forged and falsified documents to take money from the victim’s bank account and place it into her own accounts.

The theft occurred between May of 2015 and August of 2015 and resulted in over $460,000 being stolen from the victim. The suspect then used the money for her own personal gain, to include, paying off her mortgage and purchasing a vehicle.

The suspect was identified as 54-year-old Lisa Rae Claffey.

Detectives arrested Claffey on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 and charged her with one count of Grand Theft from persons 65 years of age or older.

She was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.
