Why/How:
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a 17-year-old boy after he accidentally shot his friend in the back with a handgun at a residence in unincorporated Seminole.

At about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2016, deputies responded to a residence located at 11439 60th Terrace North, in unincorporated Seminole, regarding a report that a 17-year-old male victim had been shot in the back with a handgun.

Detectives say that when deputies arrived, the victim and three other male juveniles were found at the residence. The victim informed deputies that he was accidentally shot by one of his friends at the residence.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to Bayfront Medical Center for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives say that, 17-year-old Jacob McMann, told deputies at the scene that the shooting was a result of a home invasion robbery attempt and they did not know who shot the victim.

Detectives interviewed the other juvenile witnesses at the scene and determined that the boys were smoking marijuana at the residence when McMann started playing with a handgun he had in his possession. The handgun accidentally discharged and the bullet struck the victim in the back.

Detectives located the Berretta .45 caliber handgun used in the shooting, hidden under a couch pillow at the residence. Detectives say the handgun was reported stolen as a result of a residential burglary that occurred in Seminole, on December 9, 2016.

Detectives interviewed McMann at the Sheriff’s Administration Building located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo.

Detectives arrested McMann who was already on probation for a Possession of a Controlled Substance criminal charge. McMann was transported to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center without incident.

McMann was charged with one count of Delinquent in Possession of a Firearm, one count of Delinquent in Possession of Ammunition, one count of Culpable Negligence, one count of Resisting Officer without Violence (Obstruction), and one count of felony Violation of Probation.

The investigation continues.
