When: The inmate died at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017.
Where: Pinellas County Jail is located at 14400 49th Street North, in Clearwater.
The inmate was in an open waiting area located inside of the jail at the time of his medical episode and then transported to the hospital.
Why/How: According to investigators, On Friday, April 07, 2017, 60-year-old inmate Robert George, appeared to have a medical episode, which caused him to stumble and fall while standing in an open waiting area at the Pinellas County Jail.
Detention and medical staff attended to George as a result of the fall. George was conscious when he was transported to Northside Hospital. George’s condition worsened at the hospital and he was pronounced dead at about 10:34 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017.
Detectives say there were no obvious signs of injuries on the inmate's person and no incidents of confrontation or use of force. His death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
George was arrested on April 7, 2017, charged with DUI, involving property damage.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.
The investigation continues.
