Detectives began their investigation on August 16, 2017, after the Sun Trust Bank Corporate Office notified the Sun Trust Bank located at 3705 East Bay Drive in unincorporated Largo, of suspicious activity seen on their outside ATM surveillance video.

According to investigators, the surveillance video from the bank captured two suspects installing a skimmer device on the exterior ATM machine at about 8:40 a.m. on August 12, 2017. The suspects retrieved the skimmer device later the same day after a customer found the suspicious device on the ATM.
