PINELLAS COUNTY - The Department of Detention and Corrections, was awarded reaccreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA) today in Nashville, Tennessee.

ACA auditors visited the Pinellas County Jail from May 29, 2024, through May 31, 2024, and wrote a detailed report on the facility, submitting their findings to the accreditation commission. The ACA reviewed fundamental correctional practices to include inmate and staff safety, record maintenance, enhancing staff moral and facility operations. The commission unanimously awarded the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office with a three-year reaccreditation.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is a Triple Accredited Agency (corrections, correctional health care and law enforcement), that is recognized by the National Sheriff’s Association. Less than 1% of the sheriff’s offices in the United States are Triple Accredited.

ACA accreditation is intended to improve facility operations through adherence to clear standards relevant to all areas of the facility, including safety, security, order, inmate care, programs, justice, and administration. The standards developed by ACA are the foundation of the accreditation process. They define policies and procedures necessary for the operation of correctional programs that safeguard life, health and safety of the personnel who work in juvenile and adult facilities and programs; as well as the offenders who are a part of the correctional system.
