Project Child Safe is a voluntary enrollment program designed by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for people 5- 25 years of age challenged by disabilities which impede effective communication. Assistance may be required if the person is unable to speak, properly identify themselves, becomes disoriented or acts in a manner that could be misinterpreted by first responders. Pinellas Project Child Safe captures a current digital picture, demographic information and caregiver contacts. If a person with a communication deficit is encountered, a deputy can query the Pinellas Project Child Safe system, searching by name or by the person’s physical description. Once the person’s record has been found the deputy can take action to assist the person. Pinellas Project Child Safe is also a tool to disseminate information to law enforcement. An alert can be placed on any reported missing person who is enrolled in the program. The missing person’s digital photograph is placed on an intra-net site, available only to Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office members. Law enforcement has immediate access to the image and can expedite their search. The participant’s information will only be utilized as a tool to ensure the safety of the enrollees. CRITERIA This is a voluntary and free program. Participants or their caregiver must be willing to submit two digital photographs every two years. Participants must be five to twenty-five years of age. The person enrolled must have a point of contact or guardian.
