What:

Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) have arrested a suspect who they say crashed into a mailbox and two other vehicles causing bodily injury. The suspect fled the scene on foot before being apprehended by deputies.

When:
The crashes occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. on August 22, 2015. The suspect was arrested at approximately 3:00 p.m. on August 22, 2015.  

Where:
The suspect crashed into a mail box at 632 Woodlawn St and subsequently crashed into two other vehicles near the intersection of Scranton Ave and Belleair Rd.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) have arrested a suspect who they say crashed into a mailbox and two other vehicles causing bodily injury.  The suspect fled the scene on foot before being apprehended by deputies.

According to deputies, a black Toyota Avalon was observed driving erratically near the intersection of Madison Ave and Woodlawn St in Clearwater. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the driver refused to stop and fled from deputies. Deputies did not pursue the vehicle.

Shortly afterward, deputies in the area were flagged down by a resident at 632 Woodlawn St who reported that a vehicle matching the description of the Toyota Avalon had struck his mailbox and fled the scene. While speaking with the citizen, deputies observed the same vehicle driving near the residence. Deputies initiated a traffic stop and the driver 27 year-old Ricky Fergerson initially complied. As deputies approached the vehicle, Fergerson sped off in the vehicle proceeding southbound on Scranton Ave. Fergerson failed to stop at a stop sign and side-swiped a black Dodge that was parked along the roadway. Fergerson continued southbound on Scranton Ave failing to stop for a second stop sign at Belleair Rd and struck the passenger side of a blue 2016 Mercedes, injuring the passenger. Fergerson exited his vehicle and fled the scene of the crash on foot. Deputies apprehended Fergerson not far from the scene.  

The passenger of the Mercedes, Ryan McMalton was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. 

Fergerson was arrested and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

Fergerson was charged with two counts of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage, Felony Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Injury, two counts of Fleeing and Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer,  Resisting Arrest without Violence, Possession of Crack Cocaine, and No Valid Driver’s License.   

The investigation continues.
