What:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) are investigating a fatal single vehicle crash in which the vehicle rolled backwards over the driver.

When:
The crash occurred at about 4:02 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

Where:
The crash occurred at 197th Avenue just east of Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores.

Why/How:
According to investigators, the 40 year-old male driver pulled onto 197th Avenue from Gulf Boulevard, and then pulled into a parking space on the north side of the road.

Witnesses told deputies that the driver got out of his vehicle, appeared to be lost and was looking around, -when his vehicle suddenly began to roll backwards. Deputies say the driver quickly ran back to his car, and got partially into the driver’s seat in an attempt to stop the vehicle.  According to the witness, the driver’s left foot got caught in the driver’s side front tire, and the vehicle continued to roll, which pulled him out of the vehicle and knocked him to the ground.  The driver’s side front tire then rolled over the driver, pinning him to the ground.

According to investigators,  the witnesses attempted unsuccessfully to use pieces of wood as wedges to lift the car up and free the driver. Another witness brought a vehicle jack and used it to attempt to lift the vehicle off the driver.

Suncoast Fire Rescue personnel responded and utilized a second jack to lift the car high enough to free the driver.

The driver was pronounced deceased at 4:10 p.m. at the scene.

Notification of next of kin is still pending.

The investigation continues.
