Deputies executed the final writ of possession at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016.

Where:
The Mosley Motel is located at 401 34th Street North, in St. Petersburg.

How/Why:
On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, deputies assigned to the Court Processing Unit received the final writ of possession for the Mosley Motel, located at 401 34th Street North in St. Petersburg. The court order required that the motel be vacated and turned over to the new property owners, Altis Cardinal Storage.

Deputies estimated there were approximately 46 motel rooms that were still occupied and over 100 residents residing at the motel, including families with young children and pets.

On Thursday, September 29, 2016, deputies posted a 24-hour notice at the motel informing residents of the court order to vacate the property. Deputies worked with the City of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County Social Services to meet with all remaining residents and help transition residents to alternative housing. Many residents found new residency at nearby motels, some moved in with family and friends, others sought assistance from the St. Vincent de Paul, Boley Centers Inc., and Pinellas Safe Harbor.

Pinellas County Animal Services assisted by taking possession of any unwanted pets and provided residents with seven days of free boarding for those wanting to keep their pets.

On Monday, October 3, 2016, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a press conference at the Mosley Motel to discuss the final stage of the civil process. Sheriff Gualtieri described the living conditions at the motel as “deplorable” and said, “this is not a place people should live.” Gualtieri applauded the collaborative effort from various different agencies to assist citizens in locating alternative housing. “We will make sure we do this in a humane and compassionate way but we have to respect the property owner’s rights and interests in the court order,” said Sheriff Gualtieri.

After the Sheriff’s press conference, deputies assigned to the Court Processing Unit went door to door and confirmed that the Mosley Motel was completely vacant.

Deputies returned the property to Altis Cardinal Storage without incident.
