According to investigators, 21-year-old Felix Nematbakhsh was driving his Toyota 4 Runner northbound in the curb lane of 66th Street North. Shortly after Nematbakhsh passed 46th Avenue North, a pedestrian identified as a 62-year-old man, stepped into the roadway from the east sidewalk along 66th Street N... Nematbaksh was unable to stop his vehicle before striking the pedestrian in the roadway. Paramedics arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to St. Petersburg General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Witnesses informed investigators that the pedestrian was seen consuming alcohol at two local establishments prior to the crash.
Investigators say that the pedestrian was not in a designated crosswalk at the time of the crash and alcohol and/or drug impairment is suspected.
Nematbakhsh provided a voluntary blood draw at the scene. Vehicle speed and impairment do not appear to be factors with Nematbakhsh.
Investigators have not been able to locate the pedestrian’s next of kin. An update with the pedestrian’s information will be released as soon as next of kin has been notified.
