When:
The crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2016.

Where:
The crash occurred near the intersection of US Highway 19 and Curlew Road in Dunedin.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a fatal single motorcycle crash in Dunedin.

According to investigators, a 66-year-old man driving a Harley Davidson Trike motorcycle was traveling southbound on US Highway 19 approaching Curlew Road, attempting to make a right westbound turn onto Curlew Road.

Witnesses informed investigators that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver of the motorcycle attempted to make the right turn, and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck several plastic traffic control posts and continued southwest over the raised median on Curlew Road, driving into oncoming eastbound traffic. The motorcycle continued through several eastbound lanes of Curlew Road and struck the south curb of Curlew Road, causing the motorcycle to roll over.

Investigators say that the man driving the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Paramedics arrived and transported the man to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators say that speed and impairment both appear to be factors in the single vehicle crash.

Investigators have not been able to locate the driver’s next of kin. An update with the driver’s information will be released as soon as next of kin has been notified.

The investigation continues.
