Why/ How:
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a Clearwater man for sexual battery on a minor and possession of cocaine.

According to detectives, their investigation began after the 17-year-old male victim dialed 911 and reported he was picked up and sexually battered by 56-year-old David West, who was an acquaintance of his.

Detectives say that on February 10, 2018, West called the victim, picked the victim up and drove the victim back to West’s residence. While at the residence, West told the victim to take off all of his clothes and forced the victim into having sexual activity with him.

After the incident, the victim called 911.

The victim told detectives he first met West a few months ago when he inquired about purchasing a used car from West who owns D&D Auto Center at 1711 Overbrook Avenue, Clearwater.

Through various investigative techniques, detectives were able to corroborate the victim’s statements.

Detectives arrested West at the Sheriff’s Office North District Station located at 737 Louden Avenue in Dunedin. During the arrest, detectives found a baggie containing a white powdery substance in West’s pocket. West admitted to detectives the substance was cocaine. A presumptive test confirmed this.

West was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident. He was charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of possession of a controlled substance (cocaine).

The investigation continues.
