The crash occurred at about 11:40 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019.

Where:
The crash occurred on Tampa Road at Sunflower Drive in Oldsmar.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a vehicle versus motorcycle crash in Oldsmar.

According to investigators, 18 year-old Kyle Gerber was driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on Tampa Road in Oldsmar, preparing to make a U-turn at Sunflower Drive, to proceed westbound on Tampa Road.

Investigators say, 24-year-old Zachary Mortara was driving westbound on Tampa Road, in the median lane, on his 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1. As Gerber proceeded to make a U-turn in front of approaching traffic, Mortara was unable to stop or avoid Gerber’s vehicle and struck the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Mortara was ejected from the motorcycle, sustained non-life threatening injuries, and was transported to a local hospital. Mortara was wearing a helmet.

Gerber was uninjured and issued a citation for Improper/Unsafe U-turn.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
