What:
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Pinellas County Jail.

When:
The inmate was originally booked in the jail at about 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.

He was found unresponsive at about 10:56 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Where:
The Pinellas County Jail is located at 14400 49th Street North, in Clearwater.

The inmate was located inside of his assigned housing area within the jail at the time of his death.

Why/How:
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Pinellas County Jail.

According to investigators, at about 10:56 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2020, detention staff found 30-year-old inmate Kyle Bilunka unresponsive in the shower of his housing area. Bilunka was found with a ligature around his neck from items readily available to him in his cell.

Detention staff called a medical emergency due to the fact inmate Bilunka was unresponsive. Medical Staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Bilunka. Paramedics were called and responded to inmate Bilunka’s assigned housing area. Paramedics continued life saving measures as he was transported to Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Bilunka was pronounced deceased at 11:48 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2020.

Detectives say Bilunka died from what appears to be self-inflicted injuries. 

Next of kin has been notified.

Bilunka was booked into the jail about 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 on five felony Violation of Probation charges from Brevard County, Florida with no local charges. Bilunka was awaiting transportation to the Brevard County Jail.

The investigation continues.
